TL;DR — Priced against the four tapered precision swabs found at one US retailer on 31 August 2026, a $12.00 reusable precision swab pays for itself somewhere between 52 and 619 uses, and the $24.00 three-pack — $8.00 a swab — between 35 and 412. Every one of those six numbers sits inside the 1,000 uses the maker claims, which is the finding. The claim is the maker's own and is untested, so the sensitivity test below halves it.
A precision swab is not a bulk cotton swab. It has a tapered, narrowed tip meant for lifting a smudge off a line rather than for general wiping, and it is priced accordingly — the four found for this article run from under two cents to nearly twenty-three cents each. LastObject's own LastSwab PRO is described on its page as the precision reusable cotton swab, with a tapered dual tip, which is what makes this a like-for-like comparison rather than a flattering one. Bulk swabs are a different product, and they are dealt with by number in the limitations section at the end.

This is an article about arithmetic, not eye health. Anything concerning the eye itself is a question for an eye care professional.
The numbers everything rests on
One. The reusable costs $12.00 at LastObject's US store. That is the listed price on the LastSwab page, which covers the Original, Beauty and Baby variants at the same price. The three-swab LastSwab PRO Trio is $24.00, which works out at $8.00 a swab.
Two. LastObject publishes that each swab "replaces 1,000+ cotton swabs" and that it has "8.3× less environmental impact" per an ISO-certified life-cycle assessment. Both come from the brand's own listing. Neither has been independently reproduced. They are treated here as LastObject's claims throughout, never as measurements, and the sensitivity section below shows what happens if you refuse to take the first one at face value.

The spread is wide — the dearest is roughly twelve times the cheapest — so a single "disposable price" would be meaningless. The three comparison lines below are therefore the cheapest, the dearest, and the median of the four at $0.0459. Brand names appear because a price table has to say what was priced; the product URLs are deliberately not linked, because two of them carry a trademarked term this publisher does not use in its own copy. These are shelf prices at one retailer on the stated date, they vary by location, and the Clean Skin Club listing showed its price while marked out of stock.
Assumptions, written out
- One reusable use replaces exactly one precision swab. A 1:1 swap. In practice a smudge fix sometimes takes two, which helps the reusable, and sometimes half of one, which hurts it.
- Purchase price only. No sales tax, no shipping, no water, no soap, no time spent rinsing. Adding any of those makes the reusable look worse, not better.
- Baseline frequency: one use per day. At that rate the use count is also a day count, which is the only reason any calendar figure appears below.
- The 1,000-use figure is a claim, not a cap. It is used as a reference line to test the break-evens against, and the sensitivity section halves it.
- No resale value, no repair, no partial credit at end of life.

Six numbers, and the highest of them is 619. All six fall inside the 1,000 uses the maker claims, and five of the six fall inside half of it. Against the median precision swab the single pays for itself at 262 uses and the Trio at 174 — under nine months and under six months at one use a day.
That is a different result from the one you get by pricing a reusable against bulk swabs, and the reason is not subtle. Break-even math is mostly a statement about the price of the thing being replaced, and here that thing costs between two and twenty-three cents rather than a fraction of a cent.
Cost per use is the number that actually degrades, and it degrades on the owner, not on the manufacturer:

LastObject's page also states "~$0.01 per use" and "half the cost of a cotton swab." The first is consistent with $12.00 divided by the 1,000 uses the brand publishes. The second holds comfortably against the median swab at $0.0459 and the two dearer ones — but not at the bottom of the range, where $0.0120 a use against a $0.0194 swab is cheaper without being half. Worth knowing before anyone quotes it flat.
The sensitivity test: assume the lifetime claim is 50% optimistic
The 1,000-use figure is the maker's, and nobody outside the company has counted. So halve it. Assume the honest realized life is 500 uses.
Five of the six break-evens still clear. The 52, the 262, the 35, the 174 and the 412 all land inside a 500-use life with room to spare. The one that does not is the $12.00 single measured against the cheapest precision swab in the survey, which needs 619 uses — that single pairing needs the maker's claim to be no worse than roughly 62% honest. Every other pairing survives being told the claim is half true.
That is worth more than the headline number: a result that holds only if you accept a vendor's figure is not really a result, and this one survives halving it.
Where the case does break is frequency. Halve the use rate instead of the lifetime and the naive expectation is that everything takes twice as long — 262 uses becoming a year and a half rather than nine months. But the denominator is capped by calendar life as much as by the counter: if a soft tip shows visible end-of-life wear after some number of years regardless of how often it was used, then at every-other-day use the money is spent while fewer of the repaying uses are ever banked. Anyone whose real rate is a few times a month should count their own use for two weeks and multiply. It is the single input that moves this calculation most.
What the price does not buy
- It has to be washed. Rinsed and dried between uses, every time. A tool that will not be maintained has a short honest lifetime, and a short lifetime is exactly what breaks this math.
- It can be lost. Lost at 90 uses the realized cost is $0.1333 each — worse per use than every precision swab in the table except the dearest. The break-even describes the median case, not necessarily yours.
- The lifetime is the maker's claim and is untested. No independent count exists. As our guide to the wear signs that a soft tip is finished sets out, the closest research on reusable-device retirement concludes that no cycle count can be predetermined; end of life has to be judged by looking, not by counting to a number.
- Working on other people is a different question. US cosmetology rules draw the reusable line by material, not by intention: Texas classifies porous, absorbent, rough-surfaced items as single-use and hard, smooth-surfaced items as multi-use. A soft, flexible tip is not obviously either. In a licensed multi-client setting, check the state rule before assuming reusable is permitted.
The waste side, which is not the same calculation
In item count the answer is trivial: from the second use onward, every use is one swab not bought and not thrown away. Over 1,000 uses that is roughly 999 items avoided against one item created.

In mass, a gap has to be stated. There is no named source here for the mass of a single precision swab, so the following is an assumption, not a sourced figure. At 0.2 to 0.4 g each, 1,000 displaced swabs is 200 to 400 g. LastObject publishes no unit weight for the reusable, so its own mass cannot be subtracted and the range is an upper bound.
Mass is the wrong lens anyway. The documented pathway for disposable swabs is the toilet, not the bin: the UK government's statutory review of its cotton bud ban records that 6% of UK residents flush them, that Anglian Water reported them among the most commonly flushed items other than human waste, and that England's consumption was assumed — Defra's own word — at around 1.8 billion plastic-stemmed buds a year. British figures, plastic stems only, not convertible into a US per-person rate.
The reusable's own disposal is not clean either. Field sampling by Closed Loop Partners found small-format material slipping through equipment gaps and being lost during sorting. That report covers small-format packaging rather than consumer tools, so applying it here is an inference — but the mechanism is size-based. Expect one item to landfill rather than one recycled; our piece on end-of-life for a spent tip covers what that means in practice.
On the "8.3× less environmental impact" claim: a systematic review of 27 healthcare life-cycle assessments found that switching from single-use to reusable cut global warming potential by 38% to 50% on average, while noting those studies reported only 64% of basic transparency items. Different metric, different product class — not a contradiction of 8.3×, but a reminder of the magnitudes independent reviews land on.
And a caution from the Danish EPA's life-cycle assessment of grocery bags, where an organic cotton tote needed 20,000 reuses to beat a thin plastic bag on all indicators. Same lesson as the money side: a break-even count is set by what the disposable costs — enormous against a near-free carrier bag, small against a twenty-three-cent precision swab. That report also notes it "does not take into account the effects of littering", which for a product whose documented harm is being flushed means the standard method is measuring the wrong thing.
What we could not price
- Ordinary bulk cotton swabs are excluded, and here is the number. The cheapest bulk swab in the same survey — a store-brand paper-stem 1,000-count at $4.19 — works out at $0.0042 each, well under a quarter of the cheapest precision swab above. Against that price, none of these break-evens would hold. The exclusion is a product-category boundary, not a convenience: a bulk swab and a tapered precision tip are bought for different jobs, and if you want a swab for general use rather than a tool for lifting a line, this is not the comparison you should be reading.
- Four retailers could not be read. Walmart.com and CVS.com blocked automated reading; Walgreens.com returned a 403 on the precision listing, and Amazon.com served its pages without the price block. A Walgreens search summary suggested $4.29 for one precision pack, but the figure never appeared in the retrieved page and is not used.
- No independent lifetime figure exists. The 1,000 uses is the maker's. Replacing it with a median observed count is the one change that would move this from a claim-based model to a measured one.
- No published unit mass, which is why the waste side above is a flagged assumption rather than a figure.
- One retailer, one date. A second retailer would tighten the $0.0194-to-$0.2299 band considerably, and the median with it.
Method
Prices for the four precision swabs and for both LastObject items were read on named retailer pages on 31 August 2026, each carrying a verbatim price quotation in the underlying survey. Per-swab prices are pack price divided by pack count, computed deterministically at collection rather than from memory. Break-even is purchase price divided by per-swab price, and the median is the midpoint of the four per-swab prices. No membership, sale or aggregator prices were used.
Which leaves a conclusion that is unusually simple for a cost article. If you already buy tapered precision swabs, the reusable pays for itself inside the first year of daily use at the median price, and inside two years even against the cheapest one on the shelf — without needing the maker's lifetime claim to be fully true.
